When visitors come to your door at Christmas time, there's nothing better for them to find than a traditional Christmas wreath. Learn how to make your own perfect Christmas wreath with this handy guide.

Making your own Christmas decorations is fun and adds a real festive feeling to your home. There's nothing more wonderful than being greeted by a stylish Christmas wreath on the door, and they're simple to make too!

Find out how to make a Christmas wreath with these simple steps below.

How to Make a Christmas Wreath

From a classic wreath with evergreen foliage to modern willow wreaths, there's a style of Christmas decor to suit your home.

Every wreath is made in a similar way, so if you want to make your own then follow these steps to create a unique festive wreath!

Choose Your Style

Do you want a traditional Christmas wreath or something a little more quirky? Choose a style that suits your home decor and reflects your personality, too.

A modern apartment might look best with a minimalist willow wreath, for example, while a rural country home can go all-out with rustic foliage.

Add something of yourself into the design, too. Do you love crafting? Knit a bauble or other decoration to pin in! Are you an avid baker? Add a salt-dough gingerbread man or two to make it your own.

Create Your Wreath Base

A wreath is most commonly made from either ring of florist oasis or a wire ring. You could also use a polystyrene ring or a ready-made willow wreath.

Select Your Materials

If you want lots of foliage, collect the best stems you can find. Make sure there are no bugs by rinsing and drying your foliage before use. The sap from some trees and shrubs can irritate sensitive skin so you might want to wear gloves, too.

If you've opted for a more modern look you'll need other materials too. This could be metallic spray paint, ribbons, or modern Christmas decorations.

Attach Stems

Working around your wreath ring, create the basis of the design by tying stems around it. Layer one stem over another and use thin wire or twine to attach each stem to the ring.

You should have an even layer of stems around the ring when you're finished, with none of the wreath base showing. If you want a more modern Christmas wreath, you might want some of the base showing. For example, if you've spray-painted a willow wreath with silver paint, it'll look great with some showing through.

Attach the Decorations

Add your wreath decorations to make your design shine. Pin or secure each decoration with wire or twine, hiding the attachment in the foliage.

You could try evenly spacing your decorations around the ring for a traditional style, or grouping them together in clusters for a more modern look.

Add a Hook

Add a hook at the back of your wreath to hang it up. Twist some wires or ribbons together to create a strong hook, and stick these into the back of the wreath. You may need a glue gun to secure the fixture to the wreath if it's very heavy.

Finishing Touches

Hang your wreath on the door. Is anything missing? Are the decorations balanced out so it hangs straight?

Trim any excess branches or rearrange decorations. Your wreath is complete!
