Hand-crafted From Forest to Front Door

Walk into almost any home on the Maine coast in December and you'll notice it before you even see the wreath: that clean, warm scent of fresh balsam. It's not a candle or a spray. It comes from the same forests that have been part of life in Downeast Maine for as long as anyone can remember.

Every wreath we ship starts not on an assembly line, but in someone's hands. Often the same hands, year after year.

It Starts in the Woods

The foundation of every Harbor Farm wreath is the balsam fir, Abies balsamea, harvested from the forests of Downeast Maine. Maine is one of the most heavily forested places in the eastern United States, and the cold, wet climate here produces balsam tips with a density and fragrance that's hard to find anywhere else.

We never clear-cut or take more from the forests than we use. Our harvesters take only the branch tips, the outermost growth, which encourages the tree to keep filling out and growing strong. It's a practice the people of this region have understood for generations: take care of the land, and it takes care of you.

Sorting, Bundling, Wrapping

Once the balsam tips come in from the woods, they're sorted and bundled by hand. Each bunch is a small handful of tips, layered so the greens fan out just right, then wired onto a metal ring frame, one bunch overlapping the next, working in a single direction around the circle.

The goal is a wreath that's full but not stiff, with a natural look that reflects where it came from.

The Finishing Work

Once the base ring is wrapped with greenery, the decorating begins. Pinecones, faux blueberry branches, white German statice, and hand-tied bows: each and every piece goes on by hand. Our decorators work out of a small workshop in the Downeast Acadia region, many of them part of the same communities that have helped to make Harbor Farm successful since the beginning.

While we provide a template for those who may be new to the crew each season, many often work from experience, memory, and a shared sense of what the finished wreath should look like: balanced, full, and recognizably from Harbor Farm and Downeast Maine.

A Tradition Worth Keeping

Sure, we could automate more of this process. It would be faster and cheaper. But something special would be lost in the process, even if you couldn't put your finger on exactly what it was.

Wreath-making has been a seasonal livelihood in Washington and Hancock Counties for generations. Families have long supplemented their income in the off-season by harvesting and crafting from the land around them. It's still one of the most significant seasonal economic activities in the region, and the people doing this work take real, well-earned pride in it. We also take pride in helping to support families in our community with traditions they can sometimes trace back to the 1700s.

What Shows Up at Your Door

By the time a wreath is packed and shipped, a lot of people have had a hand in it: harvesters in the woods, wrappers in the workshops, decorators finishing the details. It ships fresh and fragrant, made to hold up through a real Maine winter.

Hang it somewhere cold if you can. With proper care, the balsam will keep its color and scent for weeks, and when the season's over, you can put it in a brush pile or a garden bed. It came from the ground here, and it'll go back to it just fine.
