Wooden Toys from BogorodskoyeThe art of woodcarving began over three hundred years ago in Bogorodskoye, a small village in the Moscow region of Russia. The townspeople used traditional techniques that evolved into their own signature style that is recognizable and sought-after today. Traditionally, elders teach their carving skills and secrets to the younger members of the family. The carving is done freehand, without any plans. Typical toys feature miniature human-like animal figures with moving parts to show them at work or play. Carved in soft wood (such as alder, aspen or lime), the toys may be painted or left natural.
