Danish RAIS Wood StovesTHE STORY OF THE RAIS WOOD STOVES

In 1970, the Danish architect Bent Falk was assigned to develop a series of “green” houses, houses that were environmentally friendly, but they were to have effective fireplaces. In response to this challenge, Falk designed the first of the RAIS wood burning stoves, which won him the Danish National Design award for that year. Today, RAIS stoves are internationally acclaimed for their efficiency and their high technical standards. Over the years, RAIS has continued to develop and refined the technology.

Falk selected 8 mm (more than ¼") naval grade Swedish steel, rather than cast iron, because steel would be lighter and more malleable than iron. Reduced weight permitted larger units, which allowed greater heat output. Stoves could also be taller, permitting more stove size for the floor space taken up, better viewing of the fire, and a space under the firebox for wood storage. Because steel can be cold-bent and stamped, stoves could be designed with cleaner lines, adding a new dimension to their styling.

The effectiveness of RAIS stoves is hugely dependent on air flow control on a high technological level. Falk’s quest for efficiency led him to think about convection, which led to stoves that heat by both radiation and convection, a principle that not only holds good today, but has been developed to the point that the newest models have no ash pans because the level of burn control obviates their need.

The induction of air into the combustion chamber is controlled. Emissions from combustion are directed into an intensely hot area above the baffle over the chamber, where they are subjected to post burn reduction. And the hulls themselves are built with a considerable air space between the interior body of the stove and the exterior. That air is warmed and heat is both radiated from the exterior and emitted through spaces in the body.

In the intervening years, while the principles that guided Falk remained the determining factors of design, differences of execution of those principles have changed some of the details. For instance, some of the models have ash pans with lids on them for ease of ash removal, but today five models have no ash pans because combustion has been so improved that very little ash is left, obviating the need for an ash pan or a shaker grate. These models are the Pina, the Vola, the Gabo — Wood, the Rondo, and the new Minos.

Handles on all models are stainless steel, a non corrosive metal and one that does not acquire heat to the same degree as blue steel. They are hollow for cooling, so they remain cool even when the fire is fully running.

Stove pipes are six inches in diameter. Some models are top vented, while some can be either back or top vented. It is necessary to specify a top or a back vent. Stoves on turn tables must be vented from the top.

Depending on the model, stoves are offered with various parts in soapstone, either standard or as options. Once warm, soapstone holds heat for hours, and it has the effect of evening out the rate of heat dissemination.

Some stoves — Rondo, Pina, Gabo Wood, Malta, Bando, Bora — can be installed on a turntable, permitting the stove to be turned through 360 degrees. These stoves must, of course, be top vented. They are fitted with rollers just beneath the top plate. The pipe drops down onto the rollers, thus permitting it to remain stationary while the stove revolves. Similarly, at the bottom of the stove, there are rollers to permit the stove to turn while the platform it sits on remains still. (Note: Turntables require a three-foot clearance all around.)

To accommodate houses which have been built to air-tight standards, some stoves can be fitted with an air system which permits air to be drawn in from outside the building. Those models are New Mino, Vola, Gabo Wood, Malta, Bando, Bora.

RAIS Rondo 120The RAIS Rondo 120

New May 2008

The Rondo 120 offers heating performance equal to that of both the Rondo and Rondo 92 with an “optimal” output of 17 kBTU and an estimated heating capacity of 1100 sq. ft.

At 47.2”, it is a taller Rondo, and the combustion compartment with its glass door is higher in the room.

The 120 is a steel stove, in either black or gray. It has neither a baking compartment nor a wood storage space at the bottom. It can be either top or back vented. Because its top is of the same design and dimensions as the Rondo, a soapstone top may be ordered as an optional extra.

The 120 has an outside air supply system as standard equipment.

It can be fitted with an optional turntable. (Note: Turntables require a three-foot clearance all around.)

Stove exterior 19 1/3 x 19 1/3 x 47.2
Firebox interior 13.2 x 11.4 x 13.6
Stove, black or gray steel $4,600
Optional Soapstone top $655

RAIS Rondo 92The RAIS Rondo 92

New May 2008

The Rondo 92 is a response to those customers who want a basic steel, wood burning stove, built to state-of-the-art technical specifications. Its hull is similar to that of the Rondo but, at 36.2”, it is about 4” shorter. It has no baking compartment and no wood storage space. Its combustion control is similar to that of the Rondo, obviating the need for a shaker grate or ash pan.

The optimal heat output is rated at 17 kBTU, as is that of the Rondo. Its heating capacity is rated at 1100 sq. ft.

The 92 can be ordered in either black or gray steel, either top or rear vented. Since its top is similar to the Rondo’s, a soapstone top may be ordered as an optional extra.

The 92 includes an outside air supply system as standard equipment.

Optional soapstone top plate $655

RAIS RondoThe RAIS Rondo

The Rondo is a "New Generation" RAIS, but it adheres to the design concept of the original stoves. In many ways, it has the best of both new and earlier generations—.i.e. a wood storage space at the bottom and a baking shelf that has a soapstone slab as standard equipment. But it has the latest in air flow and combustion control. It has no ash pan or shaker grate because combustion is so efficient that little ash is left to need an ash pan. The "optimal heat output" is rated at 17 kBTU, more than the Gabo, Vola, or Pina. It can be installed on a turntable. (Note: Turntables require a three-foot clearance all around.)

The Rondo is offered in steel, either gray or black. A soapstone top plate is an optional extra. It can be either top or rear vented.

THE RAIS GIZEHThe RAIS Gizeh

Not just a grill but also a work of garden art, the RAIS Gizeh, like good wine, becomes more beautiful and interesting with time. The tall and slim pyramid shaped stove is a stunning frame for a fire in the summer evenings with friends and family gathered for a barbecue. After dinner the RAIS Gizeh can be used as an open fireplace, and always as a beautiful garden sculpture. RAIS Gizeh changes appearance with the natural oxidation of the corten steel, which gives it a rusty look. The symbol on the back of the frame is the Arabic sign for Gizeh, meaning tip of the pyramid, and is especially beautiful when the light from the fire shines through.
