FIREBACKS AS THEY ONCE WERE
Back when people relied on fireplaces and stoves to heat their homes, firebacks were in wide use among those who could afford them. A fireback directs heat that would otherwise go up the chimney or into the masonry into the room. The efficiency of the fireplace is increased and a degree of safety is added. Heat to the masonry can be decreased by as much as 30%.
Such is the practicality of the fireback, but it also offered an opportunity for decorative expression. Firebacks were cast featuring many kinds of motifs — deer, bears, foxes, heraldic designs, coats of arms, biblical images and images from mythology. Indeed, firebacks are now the subject of collections. We know of one half-timbered house that sports a fine set of firebacks mounted on its white stucco walls between the beams.
Harbor Farm offers reproduction firebacks in some 20 designs, and another 10 in contemporary designs. We also offer fireback supports, which provide a "stand for the fireback so that it can be placed at a sufficient distance from the fireplace masonry for air to pass through."
